Finances of the Nation and the Lazaridis School of Business and Economics are thrilled to announce the winner of the third annual 2026 Infographic Competition is Lily Jiang of the University of Toronto!
The competition challenged Canadian post-secondary students to develop an Infographic on an issue in Canadian public policy, preferably with a public finance focus. The theme for this year’s infographic competition was “Trade, Tariffs and (Policy) Tradeoffs.”
Lily’s work examines how trade protection can function as a hidden tax on Canadian consumers. Using clear charts and accessible examples, it shows that while tariffs may protect domestic industries and generate government revenue, they also raise the price of everyday goods—and place a disproportionate burden on lower-income households, which spend a larger share of their budgets on essentials.

Runner Up
We are also very happy to highlight the work of Zoey Rhone of Queen’s University, selected as this year’s runner-up in the infographics competition!
Zoey’s project focused on on how exposure to U.S. trade policy changes varies widely across provinces. The infographic illustrates how several factors interact to make a province vulnerable or not, and discusses various policy tradeoffs to consider when changing tariff rates.
