This simulates various features of a hypothetical Alberta Pension Plan that begins in 2025. It corresponds to the “Base CPP” (which is the main benefit we typically think of) and excludes the additional enhanced benefits that are being phased in after 2019, which are fully funded.
Note: This simulator uses detailed population projections and the latest Canada Pension Plan analysis to estimate of contributors, beneficiaries, earnings, etc. Users can modify some assumptions, but others are fixed. It is based on the working paper Tombe (2023), “The Alberta Pension Advantage? A Quantitative Analysis of a Separate Provincial Plan”. It aims to provide robust quantitative insight into the potential features of a separate provincial plan. It is not a substitute for more detailed actuarial assessments, which—to be clear—are not yet possible.
