Winner of the 2024 FON/Lazaridis School Infographic Competition

Finances of the Nation and the Lazaridis School of Business and Economics are thrilled to announce the winner of the second annual 2024 Infographic Competition is Gabriel Louër of the University of Winnipeg!

The competition challenged Canadian post-secondary students to develop an Infographic on an issue in Canadian public policy, preferably with a public finance focus.

Gabriel’s project focuses on changes in wealth inequality during the COVID pandemic, and the subsequent period of high consumer price inflation. Despite the rapid rollout of income supports, there were significant declines in the nominal wealth of the lowest 20% of the population (ranked by wealth) between 2019 and 2021. While their nominal wealth increased later, inflation eroded the purchasing power of those gains.

Gabriel is a student at the University of Winnipeg, where he is Vice-President of Academic Events in the Finance and Economics Students Association. He heard of the Competition by following Trevor Tombe’s Twitter/X feed. He decided to focus on inequality because it is a pressing issue for public policy that he feels deserves more attention.  Although he is pursuing an economics degree his interests are interdisciplinary, and he is currently particularly interested in the emerging field of geoeconomics and its connection to questions of security and strategy.

We would also like to thank the judges, Andrew Leach, Christine Neill and Frances Woolley, for generously contributing their time.

Congratulations again to Gabriel!
