Government Spending Explorer

About this explorer and how to use it

What do Canada’s governments spend money on? This tool breaks down federal, provincial, territorial and local government spending by function, with an especially close look at health.

To use it, pick governments and a spending item and switch between views. The settings sit beside the charts on wide screens and below them on narrow ones. Mix over time shows how one government’s spending has shifted between functions. The three health views show what provincial health spending would have been without population aging, spending per person at each age, and how provinces compare once differences in their age mix are removed. Every chart has a table view and downloads. Definitions and methods are in the Notes.
