Federal and Provincial Debt Explorer

How much do Canada’s governments owe? This tool tracks federal debt in every year since Confederation, from to , and the net debt of each province and territory since . It opens on federal net debt and the provinces’ combined net debt as a share of the economy (GDP). It can also show debt in dollars, in inflation-adjusted dollars, or per person.

To use it, choose governments and units in the sidebar. Over time follows net debt across the years, Federal debt and assets splits the federal government’s gross debt into its financial assets and its net debt, and Across provinces compares the provinces and territories in a single year, with the option of adding each one’s share of federal debt.
